KGMU launches CTG training

Lucknow: To reduce newborn deaths, a CTG (cardiotocography) training initiative was launched at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) on Wednesday.The workshop was inaugurated by KGMU vice-chancellor Prof Soniya Nityanand and National Health Mission (NHM) managing director Pinky Jowel in the department of obstetrics and gynaecology.Doctors said lack of oxygen to the baby during birth is a major cause of newborn deaths and CTG helps monitor the baby’s heartbeat during labour and can detect problems early, enabling timely treatment.Under the Regional Resource Training Centre (RRTC) programme, the department has developed a CTG training module. In the first phase, trainers from 20 medical colleges will be trained. This will be followed by training of doctors and nurses, along with online and offline mentoring.Prof Nityanand highlighted the use of AI in CTG and ultrasound to support services in smaller centres where specialists may not be available.Meanwhile, Jowel stressed the need to make CTG available at all healthcare centres and also emphasised the importance of treating patients with care and empathy.
